Before Monday's game with the Nationals was rained out, the Tigers scratched starter Anibal Sanchez with "right posterior shoulder inflammation," according to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press. The team downplayed the severity of the injury.

"Anibal came in this morning and had some posterior shoulder inflammation — a little soreness — so we opted to skip his start and start treating him for that and getting him ready for his next start," said head trainer Kevin Rand. "There is no great concern in his eyes."

It sounds like this is nothing serious, but shoulder trouble is always a red flag for a pitcher, and that is especially true for Sanchez. He missed three weeks with a shoulder strain last season, more than three months with another strain in 2009, and he had surgery to repair his labrum in June 2007.

Sanchez, 30, went 14-8 with a league-leading 2.57 ERA (163 ERA+) in 182 innings last season, his first full year with the Tigers. He has thrown at least 180 innings in each of the last four seasons.
