The pitching injuries continued to mount on Monday, as two more young starters were confirmed to need Tommy John surgery. Here is a recap of the day's major baseball news.

TRADES

Phillies: Acquired C Koyie Hill from the Nationals for a player to named later or cash considerations, the team announced.

RUMORS & SPECULATION

RHP Jose Contreras: Weighing retirement after the Rangers told him he will not make the team, Texas announced.

RHP Joel Hanrahan: Throwing 90-92 mph as he works his way back from elbow surgery and could sign with a team soon. (Fox Sports)

Athletics: RHP Jarrod Parker will have Tommy John surgery this week ... 3B Josh Donaldson (calf tightness) will be given another day off on Tuesday (San Francisco Chronicle) ... OF Craig Gentry (back) took full batting practice on Monday and could soon make his spring debut. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Braves: RHP Kris Medlen will have Tommy John surgery on Tuesday while RHP Brandon Beachy will seek a second opinion on his injured elbow ... LHP Mike Minor (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Monday and could make his spring debut later this week (MLB.com) ... 1B Freddie Freeman (thumb) expects to return to game action this week. Cubs: SS Starlin Castro (hamstring) will run the bases on Tuesday. (Chicago Tribune)

Diamondbacks: RHP Bronson Arroyo (back) "felt great" during a bullpen session on Sunday. (Arizona Republic)

Giants: 2B Marco Scutaro (back) made his spring debut on Monday and went 1-for-2.

Indians: OF Michael Bourn will miss about a week with a hamstring problem.

Mets: An MRI showed no structural damage in LHP Jon Niese's elbow.

Nationals: RHP Doug Fister (elbow inflammation) threw 2+ innings in a minor league game on Monday and could return to regular spring action soon. (Washington Post)

Orioles: 3B Manny Machado (knee surgery) is unsure if he will be ready in time for opening day.

Padres: 3B Chase Headley (calf) will make his spring debut on Thursday (MLB.com) ... An MRI showed no ligament damage in RHP Joe Wieland's elbow. It was feared he would need a second Tommy John surgery. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Phillies: RHP Mike Adams (shoulder surgery) will pitch in a minor league game on Wednesday and could be ready sometime in April. (Philadelphia Inquirer)

Pirates: C Chris Stewart will see Dr. James Andrews about his problematic right knee and may need surgery. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Rangers: 3B Adrian Beltre (quad tightness) is expected to return to game action on Thursday (Fort Worth Star Telegram) ... IF Jurickson Porfar (shoulder, wisdom teeth) played his first game in the field on Monday.

Reds: RHP Mat Latos (knee surgery) is tentatively scheduled to pitch in a minor league game on Wednesday (Cincinnati Enquirer) ... LHP Sean Marshall (shoulder tendinitis) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session but is likely to start the season on the DL ... RHP Homer Bailey (mild ground groin) is questionable for his next start (MLB.com)

Rockies: LHP Boone Logan (elbow surgery) threw a two-inning simulated game and could make his spring debut soon. (MLB.com)

Royals: SS Alcides Escobar (shoulder soreness) was given a cortisone shot and will not return to the lineup until Saturday (Kansas City Star) ... 2B Omar Infante was scratched from Monday's game with a sore right elbow. He is day-to-day. (Kansas City Star)

Tigers: SS Jose Iglesias has a stress fracture in each leg. There is no timetable for his return but he hopes to play in 2014 ... RHP Anibal Sanchez was scratched from Monday's start with "right posterior shoulder inflammation" ... OF Rajai Davis was also scratched from Monday's game with a tight hamstring and is day-to-day. White Sox: RHP Matt Lindstrom (oblique) will make his spring debut on Wednesday. (Chicago Sun-Times)

Yankees: OF Jacoby Ellsbury (calf tightness) will miss a third straight game on Tuesday. (New York Daily News)

MISCELLANY

Opening day starters: RHP Justin Verlander (Tigers) RHP Chris Tillman (Orioles), RHP Scott Feldman (Astros) and LHP Cliff Lee (Phillies) will all get the nod in their team's first game of the season.

Nationals: LHP Ross Detwiler will open the season in the bullpen ... Manager Matt Williams announced RHP Tyler Clippard will be his primary eighth inning reliever. (MLB.com)
