Despite losing both Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy to their second Tommy John surgeries, the Braves announced on Monday they have released veteran starter Freddy Garcia. He would have been owed $1.5 million had he made the team.

Following the Medlen and Beachy injuries two weeks ago, manager Fredi Gonzalez said "thank God we signed Freddy Garcia" to reporters. The front office obviously didn't share that sentiment.

Garcia, 37, allowed 11 runs in 17 spring innings. He had a 1.65 ERA in three starts and three relief appearances for Atlanta in 2013, getting the start in Game 4 of the NLDS. Garcia had a 5.77 ERA with the Orioles last year before landing with the Braves.

The Braves signed Ervin Santana to a one-year contract earlier this spring. He will join Alex Wood, David Hale and opening day starter Julio Teheran in the rotation. Mike Minor is returning from a shoulder problem and is expected to rejoin the rotation in early April.
