Bad news for the Blue Jays bullpen, as closer Casey Janssen will open the 2014 regular season on the disabled list with a lower back/abdominal strain (source: Mike Wilner via Twitter).

The Jays made the move retroactive to March 29 and called up catcher Erik Kratz to take Janssen's spot on the active roster. Janssen underwent shoulder surgery last November and had been limited during camp as he recovered. The obvious silver lining here is that this injury isn't to his surgically repaired shoulder.

Last season, Janssen, who's now 32, pitched to a 2.56 ERA and 3.85 K/BB ratio in 56 relief appearances for the Jays. He also logged 34 saves in 36 opportunities. Since becoming an exclusive reliever prior to the 2010 season, Janssen has notched an ERA of 2.80 and a K/BB ratio of 3.95 in 240 2/3 innings of work.

In Janssen's absence, Sergio Santos figures to fill in as the Jays' closer.
