Umpire Tim McClelland to miss 2014 season with back injury

Veteran umpire Tim McClelland, who's been umpiring games at the MLB level for 31 years, will miss the 2014 season because of a back injury. McClelland, 62, tells his hometown paper, the Des Moines Register, that he wasn't cleared by doctors prior to the season.

"I'm not working this year," said McClelland. "I'm not retiring, I'm just on the disabled list. I'm going to rest, and we have to re-evaluate at the end of the year. ...

"It's been a real struggle for me to umpire the last couple of years," he said. "I didn't want to go through what I've gone through the last couple of years."

As the Register notes, McClelland has worked four World Series and been recognized multiple times in Sports Illustrated polls of MLB players as the top umpire in the game.
