The Red Sox have placed third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day DL with a Grade 1 calf strain, manager John Farrell announced. They'll be "missing a power right-handed bat who looked like he was getting off to a pretty darn good start," said Farrell to Alex Speier of WEEI.com.
Middlebrooks, 25, is 3-for-13 (.231) with a double, a home run, one walk and four strikeouts in four games this season. He hit .227/.271/.425 (87 OPS+) with 17 home runs last season and was sent to the minors at one point. Xander Bogaerts took over at third base in the postseason.
To fill the roster spot, the team has called up utility man Brock Holt. He has hit .250/.302/.298 (67 OPS+) in 50 games with the Red Sox and Pirates the last two years. Jonathan Herrera figures to get the majority of the playing time at third base during Middlebrooks' absence.
Boston opted not to call up top prospect Garin Cecchini, who is still developing according to Farrell. The 22-year-old hit .322/.443/.471 with 33 doubles and seven home runs in 129 minor league games this year, and he is off to a 5-for-9 (.556) start at Triple-A this season.
