Mariners starting pitcher James Paxton left his start after five-plus innings Tuesday night during Seattle's home opener due to an injury. He allowed a leadoff single in the sixth to Angels leadoff man Kole Calhoun before asking to see an athletic trainer and being pulled from the game.

Per the broadcast, Paxton left with a strained lat muscle and he'll be re-evaluated Wednesday.

Paxton coughed up back-to-back homers in a three-run first for the Angels, but had retired 14 straight hitters before the Calhoun single.

On the year, Paxton sports a 2.25 ERA with 13 strikeouts and only two walks in 12 innings. The youngster was 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in four starts last season after his promotion from the minors.

The Mariners are going to get Taijuan Walker and Hisashi Iwakuma back from injury soon to bolster their rotation, but Paxton is a big part of their plans for this season.
