Derek Jeter and Dustin Pedroia will not play in Sunday night's Yankees-Red Sox series finale, both teams announced. The two franchise cornerstones are dealing with nagging injuries.

Jeter, 39, is out with a sore quad according to manager Joe Girardi. He first felt it during Friday's game. Jeter did not play on Saturday, will not play on Sunday, and the Yankees are off on Monday, so he'll get at least three straight days off. Girardi said no tests are planned.

After missing all but 17 games of last season during to various ankle and leg problems, the Yankees are understandably being careful with their captain early in the season. Jeter is hitting .286/.375/.343 (105 OPS+) with two doubles in 10 games so far this year. Jeter as started 10 of the team's first 12 games at shortstop.

The 30-year-old Pedroia is nursing a sore left wrist after being hurt during a take-out slide last week. Unlike Jeter, Pedroia was originally in Sunday's lineup before being a late scratch. It's unclear if he will go for tests or if this is a potential disabled list situation.

Pedroia played through a damaged ligament in his thumb all last season. He is off to a very slow start, hitting only .236/.236/.291 (48 OPS+) with three doubles in 12 games in 2014. Obviously the injury may be contributing to that.

The Yankees have won two of the first three games between the division rivals in this four-game weekend series.
