In the fourth inning of Sunday night's loss to the Yankees, John Farrell of the Red Sox became the first manager to be ejected for arguing an overturned call. MLB admitted to botching a call against Boston on Saturday and it appeared the frustration boiled over.

The call was overturned after Yankees skipper Joe Girardi challenged a bang-bang play at first base. Francisco Cervelli was called out on a would-be inning-ending double play, but replay showed he beat the throw. The call was overturned, Cervelli was safe at first, and a run scored on the play. The run wound up being the difference in the game.

"It was clear the replay was inconclusive," said Farrell to reporters after the game. "On the heels of yesterday, this is a tough pill to swallow. It's hard to have much faith in the system right now."

Managers have been instructed not to argue calls following a replay, but there doesn't appear to be a rule that says arguing results in an automatic ejection. Farrell did get his money's worth though, chewing out the umpires pretty good before walking off the field.

The Yankees held on for a 3-2 win in the series finale, taking three games in the four-game set.
