The Mariners on Wednesday recalled Nick Franklin from Triple-A, and Franklin could see time in the outfield, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. Franklin takes the active roster spot of Logan Morrison, who hits the DL with a hamstring strain.

Franklin, who's still just 23 years of age, is a middle infielder by trade, but with Brad Miller and Robinson Cano holding down short and second, respectively, there's no room for him there. Franklin hasn't played the outfield as a professional.

In his rookie season of 2013, Franklin disappointed, batting .225/.303/.382 in 412 plate appearances. However, he had a fairly productive spring and was off to a scorching start at Tacoma this year.

Franklin, who was a regular on top-100 prospect lists after being taken in the first round in 2009, was the subject of many offseason trade rumors.
