Here's some good news for the Orioles: Third baseman Manny Machado, who's still working his way back from October knee surgery, may be close to beginning a minor-league rehab assignment.

Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports that Machado, who was able to run the bases on Wednesday, could begin such an assignment next week. The next step, though, will be testing his left knee in extended spring training games. Assuming no setbacks, assignment to a minor-league club would soon follow.

Position players are allowed up to 20 days on a minor-league rehab stint, which could put Machado in line for a mid-May return to the active roster.

The 21-year-old Machado is coming off a 2013 season in which he put up an OPS+ of 101, hit 51 doubles and (very deservingly) won the Gold Glove at third.
