On Friday, the Athletics and lefty reliever Sean Doolittle agreed to a five-year contract extension through the 2018 season. As the team announced, the deal also includes club options for 2019 and 2020. Financial terms have not yet been disclosed.
In essence, this extension buys out Doolittle's three arbitration seasons, at a minimum. If the A's exercise their options for the final two seasons, then that will cover Doolitte's first two free-agent years.
Across parts of three big-league seasons, Doolittle has pitched to a 3.10 ERA (123 ERA+) and 5.38 K/BB ratio in 125 relief innings. His ability to tame the opposite side (.577 OPS allowed for his career against RHBs, .616 mark against LHBs) in tandem with this five-year commitment may portend an extended shot at the closer's role at some point.
