The Mets have called up outfielder Bobby Abreu, the team announced. He will provide some left-handed punch off the bench following the Ike Davis trade.

Abreu, 40, did not play at all last season and he failed to make the Phillies' roster in spring training. He hit .252/.350/.342 (94 OPS+) with three home runs in 2012, his last MLB season. Abreu went 15 for 38 (.395) with a homer and more walks (seven) than strikeouts (five) in 15 Triple-A games before getted the call. His power may be gone, but Abreu has long had some of the best strike zone judgement in baseball and he'll always have a respectable on-base percentage because he walks so much.

To make room on the roster, the Mets have optioned outfielder Andrew Brown to Triple-A Las Vegas. The 29-year-old has gone 5 for 27 (.185) with one homer in 10 games this season.
