Tommy John surgery has been "recommended" for right-hander Ivan Nova, the Yankees announced. A second opinion confirmed the initial diagnosis of a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Nova, 27, left Saturday's start with soreness in his elbow. He was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday and went for the reevaluation on Monday. Tommy John surgery comes with a 12-18 month rehab, so he is done for the season and the start of next year as well.

In four starts and 20 2/3 innings this season, Nova went 2-2 with an ugly 8.27 ERA and 1.84 WHIP. He is 40-22 with a 4.19 ERA in parts of five big league seasons.

Tommy John surgery has become a bit an epidemic early in 2014. Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy, Jarrod Parker, Patrick Corbin and Matt Moore are among those to get the zipper in recent weeks.
