First: Nationals phenom Bryce Harper had one hit and was robbed of another (by Mike Trout!) in course of his team's 5-4 comeback win over the Angels on Wednesday night. Second: Nats skipper Matt Williams, in my opinion, overreacted to Harper's earlier non-hustle play and especially handled it badly before the media.
With that said, young Mr. Harper, with one out in the eighth inning and his team down 3-1, did this on Wednesday night ...
As you can see, Harper starts out of the box in a resigned jog, but after Albert Pujols misplayed the routine grounder, he hit the appropriate gear. Had Pujols's toss to pitcher Joe Smith been more accurate, then Harper probably would've been out, fumble notwithstanding. Needless to say, that would not have been a good look for him mere days after being yanked by Williams for not running the full 90 feet.
Consider this yet another object lesson on the need to hustle no matter how pedestrian the ball seems to be coming off the bat.
