After just 18 plate appearances, Mariners infielder/outfielder Nick Franklin is on his way back to the minors. MLB.com's Greg Johns writes that Franklin is being optioned back to Triple-A Tacoma. In those 18 plate appearances, Franklin, age 23, batted .125/.222/.250 and manned the outfield for the first time in his career.
In his rookie season of 2013, Franklin disappointed, batting .225/.303/.382 in 412 plate appearances. Franklin, who was a regular on top-100 prospect lists after being taken in the first round in 2009, was the subject of many offseason trade rumors, thanks largely to the Mariners' logjam in the middle infield.
