Padres third baseman Chase Headley dealt with a strained left calf during spring training and he had to leave the game in the second inning Thursday night with a right calf strain (MLB.com has video of the at-bat that it appears Headley suffered the injury).

The Padres have already told reporters (Corey Brock) that Headley is headed to the disabled list.

Headley also has been hampered by a sore knee and sore biceps in recent weeks and is badly struggling at the plate. He's hitting .186/.250/.314 with two homers and seven RBI in 76 plate appearances so far.

There's no word just yet as to the severity of Headley's calf injury.

Headley, 29, finished fifth in NL MVP voting in 2012 when he hit .286/.376/.498 (145 OPS+) with 31 doubles, 31 homers and an NL-best 115 RBI while winning a Gold Glove. He had a down year in 2013 and now he's off to a disaster of a season in 2014. Why does this matter right now?

Because Headley is set to be a free agent after the season.
