Rangers activate Beltre from DL; Kouzmanoff has herniated disc

Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, effective immediately, the club has announced. As a corresponding move, Kevin Kouzmanoff -- who has been brilliant in filling in for Beltre -- was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a herniated L5-S1 disc in his lower back.

Kouzmanoff had left Tuesday's game against the A's with lower back tightness and headed back to Texas for tests on his back. Per MLB.com, Kouzmanoff may end up needing surgery.

Kouzmanoff, 32, hit .362/.412/.617 (178 OPS+) with six doubles, two homers and 10 RBI in 13 games after taking over for the injured Beltre. Still, the track records here indicate Beltre is still a net-positive moving forward over Kouzmanoff.

One might recall that Beltre was angry when he was placed on the DL because he felt like he could have been ready to play within a few days. Before his quad injury, he was hitting .286/.394/.393 (117 OPS+) with three doubles and four RBI. He's finished in the top 10 of AL MVP voting in three of the past four years.

Of note from the Rangers press release: The club has had 13 players on the DL so far this year, which leads the majors. And they're in first place. Impressive.
