The Pirates on Saturday placed catcher Russell Martin on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Martin sustained the injury during Friday night's 1-0 loss to the Cardinals.

To replace Martin on the active roster, the Pirates have recalled RHP Jared Hughes. Tony Sanchez who was recalled when closer Jason Grilli (oblique) recently hit the DL, will provide depth at the catcher position, while Chris Stewart will likely take over as the regular in Martin's absence.

This season, Martin, age 31, is batting .242/.342/.355 in 16 games. In addition to having good pop by positional standards, Martin is also an elite defensive catcher, particularly when it comes to framing pitches for strikes. Needless to say, his presence will be missed.
