Interestingly, Montgomery was lifted after 8 1/3 innings, obviously with the no-no intact. Over those 8 1/3 frames, Montgomery struck out nine and walked one. When he was pulled, he was at 106 pitches, three shy of his career high. While you'd love to see him close it out, the minors are for development, and usage limits will always hold sway over individual bids for history.
The 24-year-old Montgomery peppered top-100 prospects until struggling in the high minors from 2011 onward. Originally a supplemental-round choice by the Royals in 2008, Montgomery came to the Rays as part of the James Shields-Wil Myers blockbuster of December 2012. He entered this season as the no. 18 prospect in the Rays' system. Saturday's gem lowered his 2014 ERA to 2.81.
