Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday due to a thumb injury that he suffered on a head-first slide Friday night.

"The early tests today are pretty good," manager Matt Williams said Saturday (AP). "The X-rays are negative. There's some swelling there. We just want to make sure we knock it out."

So that doesn't sound too bad. There is this, however, from the Washington Post:

Harper will see another doctor for a second opinion, according to a person familiar with the situation, which should determine the full nature of Harper's injury and how long it will keep him out. “Doesn't look good,” the person said.

After Harper visited with a hand specialist Saturday at Nationals Park, the doctor ordered an MRI and the Nationals feared Harper may have suffered ligament damage. Television cameras spotted Harper wearing a small cast on his hand during the Nationals' 4-0 victory over the Padres.

Harper, 21, is hitting .289/.352/.422 (117 OPS+) with four doubles, two triples, a homer, nine RBI and eight runs this season. With him on the shelf, the Nationals will go with Nate McLouth in left most games and outfielder Steven Souza has been recalled from the minors as a corresponding move.
