Concerns about Harper's thumb grew over the weekend and, Monday morning, Heyman reported that the Nationals were concerned that Harper could miss "significant" time. Those concerns have come to fruition now, as Harper's ligament damage requires surgery.
Harper, 21, injured the thumb on a head-first slide into third Friday night on a bases-loaded triple. He immediately reacted and held his thumb in obvious pain. He was replaced in the lineup and subsequently placed on the disabled list Sunday morning. He is hitting .289/.352/.422 with four doubles, two triples, a homer, nine RBI and eight runs this season.
News of the surgery was first reported by Keith Law of ESPN.com.
