Between Sunday night's win over the Angels and Tuesday night's series opener against the Mariners, the Yankees managed to lose two players to injury. Jacoby Ellsbury (hand) and Michael Pineda (lat) are day-to-day, manager Joe Girardi announced.

Ellsbury, 30, was originally in Tuesday's lineup but has since been scratched. Tests showed no structural damage and Girardi is hopeful he will return to action on Wednesday, though he did acknowledge the hand has been sore for a few days. Ellsbury is hitting .312 with eight steals early in his first season in New York.

Pineda, 25, felt stiffness in his lat during a recent simulated game in Tampa and is being sent for an MRI. Girardi said his next start is in "jeopardy." Pineda is currently serving a 10-game suspension for having pine tar on his neck. He is 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA in four starts this year after missing the 2012-13 seasons following shoulder surgery.

With Ellsbury out, Brett Gardner will assume center field and leadoff hitter duties. David Phelps replaced Pineda in the rotation during his suspension and will stay there for the time being.
