You'll recall that Giants right-hander Matt Cain was a late scratch from his scheduled Tuesday start after cutting his finger during the hazardous course of food preparation. Now, the Giants are hoping that Cain will be able to return to the mound on Monday against the Pirates. As MLB.com's Rick Eymer writes, if Cain's finger still isn't sufficiently healed, then Yusmeiro Petit will again start in his stead.

This season, Cain has pitched to a 4.35 ERA and 2.50 K/BB ratio after five starts. The 29-year-old is coming off a disappointing 2013, but he notched top-10 Cy Young finishes in both 2011 and 2012. For his career, Cain owns an ERA+ of 118 across parts of 10 major-league seasons. He's in the second year of a five-year, $127.5-million contract.
