The first day of May was supposed to have an especially light schedule, but Mother Nature intervened and brought us three doubleheaders. We ended up having lots of close games, too. Let's round it up.

As an obligatory reminder, these are the quick-hitters. For the full story, when applicable, click on the link provided.

ROSTER MOVES

Astros: Reliever Tony Sipp was released by the Padres and signed by the Astros, per Ultimate Astros.

Orioles: Infielder Steve Lombardozzi was sent to the minors as All-Star Manny Machado was activated.

INJURY UPDATES

Brewers: Ryan Braun (oblique) is improving and could return this weekend (MLB.com).

Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to return to the rotation Monday.

Giants: They're hoping Matt Cain can make his scheduled start Monday.

Mariners: Expect Hisashi Iwakuma to return to the rotation Saturday.

Reds: Tony Cingrani has been placed on the DL due to shoulder tendinitis. Billy Hamilton left Thursday's game with a hand injury and is day to day. And, of course, there's Aroldis Chapman, who threw 18 pitches in his first rehab outing -- hitting 101 mph on the radar gun (cincinnati.com).

Rockies: Carlos Gonzalez was pulled from Thursday's game with a bruised left index finger and is considered day to day (MLB.com).

Royals: Starter Bruce Chen is headed to the disabled list.

Twins: Aaron Hicks had to leave the nightcap after crashing into the center-field wall and experiencing concussion-like symptoms (twincities.com).

MISCELLANY

Blue Jays: With J.A. Happ ready to make a start and Dustin McGowan looking good enough to stick around in the rotation, manager John Gibbons might use a six-man rotation (MLB.com).

Braves: Chris Johnson and the club have agreed to a contract extension.

Red Sox: It "doesn't appear" they'll sign reliever Joel Hanrahan, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. In somewhat-related news, closer Koji Uehara has battled shoulder issues and his velocity is down, but he says he's not injured (weei.com).

Twins: Mike Pelfrey is struggling mightily right now and understands he may be removed from the rotation (startribune.com).
