On Friday, the Indians placed All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right oblique. The move was made retroactive to April 30. To replace Kipnis on the active roster, the Tribe has recalled infielder Jose Ramirez from Triple-A.

Kipnis this season is batting .234/.354/.394 (116 OPS+) with three homers in 27 games. In 2013, Kipnis put up an OPS+ of 133 to go with 17 homers, 36 doubles and 30 steals. For his efforts, he finished 11th in the AL MVP balloting. As for Ramirez, the 21-year-old was off to a hot start (.849 OPS) for Columbus.

The move comes as the last-place Indians are mired in a six-game losing streak.
