Giants lose Brandon Belt to broken thumb following hit by pitch

Very bad news for the Giants: first baseman Brandon Belt suffered a broken left thumb when he was hit by a pitch from Dodgers lefty Paul Maholm in the second inning of Friday's game, the team announced.

Here are two angles of the pitch:

Belt was looked at by the trainer and he actually stayed in to run the bases, but he was pulled from the game after the inning. He was sent for x-rays, which revealed the fracture. Despite the Giants-Dodgers rivalry, the pitch was pretty clearly unintentional.

Belt, 26, came into Friday's game hitting .264/.312/.504 (134 OPS+) with four doubles, nine home runs and three stolen bases in 34 games this season. Joaquin Arias took over first base. Mike Morse could see time there during Belt's absence.

The Giants have not announced any kind of timetable for Belt, but it will surely be measured in weeks, not days.
