You'll recall that not long ago in this very space we alerted you to the first career relief appearance of veteran outfielder Jeff Francouer. This season, "Frenchy" isn't doing much with the bat for El Paso, the Padres' Triple-A affiliate, but on Friday night he logged his fourth scoreless relief appearance of the season (HT: Dennis Lin, San Diego Union-Tribune). Here's some action-news footage of said fourth appearance ...
He works quickly! He throws something resembling a breaking ball every now and then! He pitched out of a self-inflicted jam!
Here's Francoeur's updated pitching line for the season: 3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 2 HBP.
Nifty! Note the two HBPs, which suggests that Francoeur will claim in the inside of the plate with Gibsonian authority. Of his 50 pitches on the season, 30 have gone for strikes.
All of Francoeur's appearances have come in blowouts of varying degrees, but maybe if he keeps hanging zeroes he'll get a high-leverage outing one of these days. If nothing else, the mounting prospect of Francoeur's carving out a second career as a mop-up reliever should greatly please the baseball enthusiast.
