UPDATE: The Marlins have placed Fernandez on the 15-day DL with a right elbow strain, the team announced. A strain is a tear by definition, though that does not mean it is severe. The full extent of the injury is unknown and Fernandez is heading back to Miami for more tests. He first felt discomfort during Friday's start.

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez is having an MRI in Los Angeles, reports Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. The nature of his injury -- extent, body part, etc. -- is unknown. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says Fernandez is expected to be placed on the disabled list.

The Marlins are currently in Los Angeles for a series against the Dodgers. Manager Mike Redmond will meet with the media for his daily chat at approximately 6:30pm ET, at which point we will hopefully find out more about Fernandez and his injury.

The Padres roughed the 21-year-old Fernandez up on Friday night, scoring six runs in five innings thanks to two home runs. The right-hander's fastball was down a tick or two during the start, and it really dropped off in the middle innings:

For what it's worth, Spencer reports Fernandez was not feeling well before the game and actually threw up in the dugout.

Aside from a tight hamstring early in spring training last season, Fernandez has been perfectly healthy throughout his professional career. No arm problems or anything like that. Of course, any time you hear a pitcher is going for an MRI, it's easy to assume the worst. It's a scary thing.

Fernandez is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA (154 ERA+) in eight starts and 51 2/3 innings this season despite Friday's clunker. He leads all of baseball with 70 strikeouts.
