Earlier on Monday, the Mets officially announced right-hander Jenrry Mejia had been demoted to the bullpen after a string of three terrible starts. Fellow righty Rafael Montero will take his place in the rotation.
Mejia was not demoted to mop-up duty, however. He was thrown right into the fire in the Subway Series opener on Monday. Manager Terry Collins asked him to first keep the game close in the seventh and then protect a two-run lead in the eighth. Mejia's final pitch was an inning-ending called strike three to Brett Gardner, and he celebrated by moonwalking off the mound:
Okay, so he didn't really moonwalk, but that's close enough.
