Gausman, 23 and a right-hander, has a 5.66 ERA and 3.77 K/BB ratio in 20 games at the major-league level, five of which have been starts. However, the LSU product and fourth pick of the 2012 draft entered the season ranked as the no. 10 prospect overall by Baseball Prospectus.
No one presently in the Baltimore rotation has been a complete disaster this season, but Miguel Gonzalez (4.78 ERA, 87 ERA+) certainly seems ripe for replacement. As well, Gausman has no.-1 starter upside, and a genuine ace is something the O's lack right now.
Still, as Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun notes, it's not clear whether Gausman is poised to stick in the big-league rotation at this time. Presumably, Wednesday's results will have at least a little something to do with that.
