The White Sox have activated infielder Jeff Keppinger off the 15-day DL and designated him for assignment, the team announced. He has been rehabbing from September shoulder surgery.

Keppinger, 34, hit .253/.283/.317 (63 OPS+) with four home runs in 117 games last season, his first with the ChiSox. He had hit .325/.367/.439 (126 OPS+) with nine homers in 115 games for the Rays in 2012.

The White Sox will go forward with Gordon Beckham, Marcus Semien and Conor Gillaspie joining stalwarts Alexei Ramirez and Jose Abreu on the infield. Third base prospect Matt Davidson is in Triple-A.

Chicago signed Keppinger to a three-year, $12 million contract last offseason. Unless he is surprisingly claimed off waivers, the team still owes him $4 million this year and $4.5 million next year.
