Happy Anniversary: Nolan Ryan's first no-hitter

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan is known for many things, but the two items atop the list are his career strikeout total (5,714, which is easily the the most in the history of baseball) and his whopping seven no-hitters.

No other pitcher has thrown more than four no-nos. Sandy Koufax threw four while Bob Feller, Cy Young and Larry Corcoran accomplished the rarity three times each. No one else has done it more than twice.

Considering the thousands of MLB pitchers in baseball history, this puts in perspective just how ridiculous it is that Nolan Ryan threw seven no-hitters.

We mention it on this day because it is May 15. Back on May 15, 1973, Ryan threw his first career no-hitter. It came for the Angels. It wasn't perfect, as he'd walk three, but he struckout 12 in his domination of a very good offensive Royals team.

Here's MLB Network's video package:

The Ryan Express, man. We'll never see anyone approach seven no-hitters again. I feel pretty confident in that statement.
