Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a bone spur in his right elbow, the club announced Thursday. The corresponding move is the expected activation of Thursday's scheduled starting pitcher, Chase Whitley.

Earlier this week, an MRI revealed a bone spur in Beltran's right elbow. Initially, the Yankees hoped to keep him off the disabled list, but he obviously hasn't made any improvement in the last few days. Surgery is a possibility, though Beltran and the Yankees would like to avoid it. If he does have surgery, the recovery timetable is six to eight weeks (via Sweeny Murti).

Beltran, 37, is hitting .234/.286/.430 (95 OPS+) with 10 doubles, five homers and 15 RBI in 33 games this season. He signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Yankees this past offseason.

With Beltran down, the Yankees will likely use Ichiro Suzuki as the primary right fielder with Zolio Almonte and even Kelly Johnson as other outfield options.
