The Mets currently have three outfielders playing well in Curtis Granderson, Chris Young and Eric Young Jr., so it's been tough for young Juan Lagares to crack the lineup for the last week or so. More than a few fans are outraged, to put it lightly.
Lagares got a rare start in center field on Saturday afternoon, and he had a big impact in the team's 5-2 win over the Nationals. First he hit a two-run homer off Gio Gonzalez in the third inning to give New York a five-run cushion:
Then, in the sixth inning, Lagares helped protect a three-run lead by robbing Jayson Werth of a home run:
According to stat guru Mark Simon, Lagares is the first player to hit a home run and rob a home run in the same game this season. That is otherwise known as the Carlos Gomez/Mike Trout special.
Manager Terry Collins confirm Lagares will start again on Sunday, by the way.
