The baseball had a nose for Cardinals starter Michael Wacha on Wednesday evening. First, he was able to make an outstanding play on a scorching liner off the bat of Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado:

So Wacha dodged a bullet there. He wasn't as fortunate in the bottom of the sixth inning, when a Matt Adams liner into the Cardinals dugout appeared to strike him.

Wacha wouldn't come back out for the seventh, despite having thrown six shutout innings and only 88 pitches. And, sure enough, the Cardinals have now announced that Wacha suffered a bruised right elbow on the foul ball. So it did get him, and unfortunately it got him on his pitching elbow.

The 22-year-old right-hander now has a 2.54 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings in his 10 starts this season.

The severity of the bruise hasn't yet been reported by the Cardinals.
