VIDEO: Bryce Harper plays football catch despite injured thumb

Time to fire up the outrage machine.

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper played catch with a football before Wednesday's game despite recently having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. To the action footage, courtesy Scott Allen of the Washington Post:

Notice that Harper is a) wearing a brace on his surgically repaired thumb, b) catching the ball with his right hand (and torso) only, and c) doing this at the ballpark, suggesting the Nationals knew it was going on and were totally cool with it.

"OK, I feel better now that I saw him do that one-handed," play-by-play man Bob Carpenter said during the television broadcast as the clip was shown. "I'm thinking, we're going to have a broken thumb catching footballs?"

Risky? Yeah, a little bit. Likely to be blown out of proportion? Of course. This isn't much different than playing catch with the baseball to keep his arm in shape.

Harper, by the way, will soon begin range of motion exercises as he ramps up his rehab from the surgery.
