A long holiday weekend of baseball is upon us. Here is a recap of Friday's news from around the league as we head into the Memorial Day weekend.

RUMORS & TRANSACTIONS

RHP Jason Marquis: Was scheduled to throw for scouts on Friday as he attempts a comeback from Tommy John surgery at age 35. (Fox Sports)

Angels: LHP Sean Burnett (elbow) was activated off the 15-day DL, the team announced. He has not pitched in MLB in nearly a full year.

Astros: Working to increase their presence in Japan. The team did pursue Masahiro Tanaka this past offseason. (MLB.com)

Blue Jays: Designated RHP Esmil Rogers for assignment, the team announced. The move cleared a spot on the roster for RHP Liam Hendriks.

Cardinals: Released OF Joey Butler so he could sign with the Orix Buffaloes in Japan, the team announced.

Pirates: Activated RHP Jason Grilli (oblique) off the 15-day DL.

Red Sox: SS Stephen Drew cleared optional waivers and will begin playing minor league games as he prepares to rejoin the team. Optional waivers are revocable, so even if another team claimed Drew, the Red Sox would have pulled him back. (Boston Globe)
