The donation to Jeter's foundation is of course a commendable gesture, but the rest of it -- giving expensive items (that he'll probably put in storage) to a guy who's a millionaire at least 100 times over -- has always struck me as bizarre. He's a ballplayer who's retiring so as to devote more time to the Good Life. Why not just some recognition over the PA and a standing O as he presents the lineup card, in addition to the donation, of course?
Regarding all of this, White Sox manager Robin Ventura seems to be similarly inclined ...
Robin Ventura says it's kind of weird with Jeter celebrations and stuff. "He's not dying."— JJ Stankevitz (@JJStankevitz) May 25, 2014
Hear, hear, Robin Ventura. Hear, hear.
