The Red Sox-Rays rivalry grew more tense last week when David Price plunked David Ortiz. Apparently it was in response to Big Papi spending a little too much time admiring a home run during the ALDS last fall. Warnings were issued and Price hit Mike Carp later in the game, but it was ruled unintentional. Price has not been suspended.
Workman, 25, has no record with a 3.24 ERA in 16 2/3 innings across two starts and three relief appearances this year. He has spent most of the season in Triple-A, but was called up to join the rotation when Felix Doubront hit the disabled list.
Price started the whole mess by hitting Ortiz, but at least he hit him in the backside. Workman threw behind Longoria and it was up near his head. MLB has to drop the hammer whenever the head is involved.
Workman told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that will he appeal the suspension. He is scheduled to start on Wednesday night.
