The Pirates are set to call up outfield prospect Gregory Polanco in time to play Friday, reports Tim Williams of PiratesProspects.com. One Pirates official tells CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman that Polanco will not be coming up Friday. The working assumption, however, is that it will be reasonably soon, either way.
The 22-year-old Polanco is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in all of baseball. Entering the 2014 season, he was ranked as the no. 10 overall prospect by Baseball America. His 2014 line of .351/.410/.547 at Triple-A with 14 stolen bases has only improved his standing.
The Pirates have been playing better of late, but they could still use some help offensively. Potentially, Polanco will improve their attack. While Polanco has been deserving of a call-up for some time, the Pirates were likely waiting until the "super two" deadline for accelerated arbitration-eligibility passed, which it likely has.
