Orioles' Johan Santana to miss rest of 2014 with torn Achilles'

Orioles lefty Johan Santana will miss the rest of the 2014 season after suffering a torn left Achilles' tendon. Santana, who was working his way back from 2013 shoulder surgery and was on the verge of beginning a minor-league rehab assignment, suffered the injury while retrieving a batted ball during an extended spring training start. As MASN's Roch Kubatko tweets, GM Dan Duquette has confirmed the news.

The Orioles had been hoping that the 35-year-old two-time Cy Young winner, once his shoulder fully healed, would provide help to the rotation. Obviously, that's not going to happen now. Given this latest injury and Santana's age and inability to stay healthy in recent years, it's of course entirely possible that his career is over. On that front ...

In the event that Santana is done, it's been one heck of a career: 139-78; 3.20 ERA; 136 ERA+; 2,025 2/3 innings; four-time All-Star. All of that is in addition to those two Cy Youngs mentioned above. You're talking about a guy who was on a Hall of Fame track before those late-career injuries.
