Phillies sign first-round pick Aaron Nola

The Phillies have agreed to terms with their first-round draft pick, right-handed pitcher Aaron Nola. The details of the deal aren't yet known, but the slot value of the pick (seventh overall) is just under $3.4 million.

Nola, a 21-year-old junior, was 11-1 with a 1.47 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 116 1/3 innings for LSU this past season. His number give him a great case as the best pitcher in the college game this season, taking that title from third-overall pick Carlos Rodon (taken by the White Sox).

Nola was the SEC pitcher of the year in both 2013 and 2014, the only pitcher to ever win the award twice.

The book on Nola is a three-pitch arsenal that includes a low-to-mid 90s fastball, a sinking change and a slider. He has a good delivery and commands all three pitches very well.

Don't expect Nola to crack the Phillies rotation this season or anything crazy like that, but he may not be in the minors very long.
