Dodgers starting pitcher Chad Billingsley had Tommy John surgery in April 2013 and was working his way back in hopes of rejoining the Dodgers quite soon. Instead, he was shut down during a bullpen session Wednesday and will have to have his elbow examined -- as the throwing session did not go well, the club told reporters (Bill Shaikin).

Billingsley, 29, was an All-Star in 2009. His last full season came in 2011, when he was 11-11 with a 4.21 ERA in 188 innings. He was diagnosed with a tear in his ulnar-collateral ligament late in 2012 and hoped to avoid surgery, as he received a platelet-rich plasma injection heading into the 2013 season. He only managed two starts before shutting down and deciding to have the procedure, though.

The Dodgers' current rotation is Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-jin Ryu, Dan Haren and Josh Beckett, so it's not like there's a natural opening for Billingsley to fill. Still, the depth never hurts and Paul Maholm didn't work out well as an injury replacement option earlier this year.
