Even though strikeouts continue to rise throughout baseball -- MLB has set a new record high strikeout rate in each of the last six seasons and is on pace to do it again this year -- striking out the side on nine pitches is exceedingly rare. It's only happened 76 times since 1889.

On Saturday night, Rockies right-hander Rex Brothers became the fifth (fifth!) pitcher to record an immaculate inning this season. Here's the video:

Before Brothers, Angels righty Garrett Richards accomplished the feat on June 2:

Justin Masterson of the Indians fanned the side on nine pitches two days before Richards:

Roughly two weeks before that, Phillies southpaw Cole Hamels did the deed:

Rays right-hander Brad Boxberger got the whole thing started with the season's first nine-pitch, three-strikeout inning on May 8:

Boxberger's immaculate inning is clearly the most impressive of the five. He inherited a bases-loaded, no outs situation and struck out the side on the minimum number of pitches.
