Braves setup man David Carpenter has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to strained right biceps, the club announced Tuesday. As a corresponding move, right-handed reliever Pedro Beato has been summoned from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Carpenter, 28, was one of baseball's more effective relievers last season with a 1.78 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings. This year, though, he's had a bit more trouble keeping guys off base. His WHIP is all the way up to 1.74 and that, in part, has caused his ERA to spike to 4.23. Of course, his strikeout rate (11.4 K/9) and FIP (2.69) show he's still doing some positive things.

Without Carpenter, the Braves will mostly use Jordan Walden and Anthony Varvaro as the bridge to closer Craig Kimbrel.

The Braves enter Tuesday's action with a 1/2 game lead over the Nationals in the NL East.
