Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner was supposed to start against the Giants Monday. Instead, he's been scratched from the start and Cuban import Odrisamer Despaigne will make his major-league debut.

The word as things currently stand is Cashner isn't injured or traded but instead that the club is just being conservative with him.

Cashner, 27, is as talented as any pitcher in the game, but he's also had quite the injury history. Since 2011, he's been on the DL with shoulder or elbow injuries three different times, spanning over 200 games.

This season, Cashner is 2-6 with a 2.36 ERA (146 ERA+), 1.19 WHIP and 59 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings. He missed around four starts due to strained elbow, though.

Despaigne, 27, is 1-3 with a 6.03 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings in seven starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season -- his first in America.
