What follows cannot be classified as breaking news for two reasons: One, it happened Saturday night, and, two, it's not revelatory to point out that Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen has a wipeout cut fastball.
That said, Jansen's cutter, not unlike a Klimt painting, is evergreen in its capacity to be appreciated. Let us do so now ...
And the people say: We are in awe of what we have just seen, provided what we have seen is even to be believed.
The people also say something like "golly" or "heavens to Betsy" or "!@#$."
Given the late, sharp glove-side break on that pitch, it might as well be a 95-mph slider. You can imagine how such things tend to go for the batsman. I shall watch this again and again until artifice and craft fill me!
Jansen isn't having his best season thus far in 2014, but his overall body of work remains outstanding. In large part, he's one of the best swing-and-miss pitchers in baseball because of that cutter and the filth it exudes.
