Ready to feel old? Derek Jeter turns 40 years old Thursday. The Yankees captain is in his 20th season, which is hard to believe. I still remember when he was just a young kid getting the nod to replace the injured Tony Fernandez. Did you know the Yankees almost traded Mariano Rivera to the Mariners for Felix Fermin in the wake of Fernandez's injury rather than play Jeter? Crazy.

Anyway, Jeter currently has 3,388 career hits, the ninth most in baseball history. It seems likely he will pass Carl Yastrzemski (3,419), Honus Wagner (3,420) and Cap Anson (3,435) to move into sixth place all-time before retiring at the end of the season. Passing Tris Speaker (3,514) to move into fifth place is a long shot but not completely impossible with 85 games remaining.

Jeter has never played a position other than shortstop in his Hall of Fame career (other than DH, of course), so, in honor of his 40th birthday, let's see where he ranks in various categories among shortstops. This stats are accumulated as a shortstop only, so the players do not get credit for anything they did at another position.
