The Tampa Bay Rays have placed shortstop Yunel Escobar on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 25, with a right shoulder injury. The club announced the move Tuesday morning, though a corresponding move won't come until later Tuesday.

Escobar, 31, hasn't played since injuring the shoulder on June 24, though he was attempting to avoid a stint on the DL. The shoulder just didn't improve enough for that to happen.

Escobar is hitting .244/.322/.328 (86 OPS+) with 10 doubles, four homers and 22 RBI this season.

With Escobar out of the lineup, the Rays have been flipping Ben Zobrist to shortstop and using Logan Forsythe or Sean Rodriguez at second.
